How to fix 0x80004005 error?

If you encounter error 0x80004005 when downloading the Windows 10 KB3087040 update.

The error message: “There were problems installing some updates, but we’ll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 for x64/x32 based Systems (KB3087040) – Error 0x80004005”

Method 1

Step 1. Click Start and type Troubleshooter in the search box. Then click on “Troubleshooter”.

Step 2. Click on View all on the left menu.

Step 3. Click Windows Update and then click Advanced.

Step 4. Select Apply repairs automatically and Run as Administrator, then, you can click Next and follow the steps to complete the troubleshooting.

Method 2

Delete everything in the download directory and try to download again

Step 1. Open This PC

Step 2. Go C:Windows\Software\Distribution\Download

Step 3. Press Ctrl + A then press Delete

Step 4. Try your download again

Download the update manually

You can search from Google or from the official Microsoft website to download the update, Select the version you want to download, or search for the latest update here.

If  0x80004005 error appears on your virtual machine.

Method 1

Step 1. Press at the same time Windows + R key on the keyboard to open the Run dialog box.

Step 2. In the Run dialog box, type regedit and click OK or press Enter.

Step 3. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers

Delete Registry key and restart the virtual machine. If the problem is not fixed, try the next method.

Method 2

Step 1. Press at the same time Windows + R key on the keyboard to open the Run dialog box.

Step 2. In the Run dialog box, type regedit and click OK or press Enter.

Step 3. Go to \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System.

Step 4. Right click, click New, QWORD (64-bit) or DWORD (32-bit) depending on the version of Windows you use.

Step 5. Set the value to 1 and then restart the computer to complete.

If you get error 0x80004005: Unspecified error

Step 1. Open the Run dialog box by pressing the Windows key + R
Step 2. Type devmgmt.msc into the box and press Enter to open Device Manager.
Step 3. Find and expand the Network adapters dialog. Then click the View icon to check Show hidden devices.
Step 4. Find all devices with the name Microsoft 6to4, right click on them and uninstall.
Step 5. Restart your computer.
